Preston mother jailed for 22-month-old's injuries

A mother from Lancashire has been jailed for causing "extensive" injuries and neglecting her 22-month-old son.

Police said the boy from Preston was taken to hospital on 12 January 2012 with a fractured collar bone and various "unaccounted" bruises.

He was later found to have fractures to bones in his upper arm and forearms. His mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denied all charges.

The 22-year-old was sentenced to four years in jail at Preston Crown Court.

She was found guilty of three counts of wounding and three counts of neglect.

Speaking after the sentence, Det Sgt Jamie Lillystone said it had been a difficult case to investigate.

He said: "We have never been able to identify how the injuries were caused to the young boy as she denied the allegations throughout the trial.

"The injuries sustained by the child were extensive but fortunately he has since made a full recovery."
