Five men and two 17-year-old boys have been arrested over violent disorder in Lancashire.

Police said bricks and bottles were thrown at police vehicles on Castlehey, Skelmersdale, shortly after 15:00 BST.

Officers were patrolling the area after an earlier attack on a delivery driver, said police.

The men, aged 19, 20, 21, 24 and 26, and two 17-year-olds, all from Skelmersdale, have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

Lancashire Police said a delivery driver was challenged by youths from an address on Castlehey at 00:40.

One of the youths attacked his vehicle with a crowbar and damage was caused to his vehicle.

Ch Insp Nick Emmett said the disorder was being taken "extremely seriously" and said the force would maintain a "highly visible presence" in the area.

He said: "This is a long term, ongoing operation to disrupt, tackle and prevent criminals from operating in Skelmersdale.

"We are committed to using all the powers available to us, whether that is ASBOs, closure orders or evictions to ensure our community is not left intimidated or vulnerable by a small minority of criminals intent on causing problems."
