Blackpool Council considers ban on adverts for alcohol
Blackpool Council is considering banning all alcohol advertising outside pubs, shops and off-licences.
A new by-law is being proposed in a bid to tackle the resort's alcohol-related health problems.
Councillor Sarah Riding, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said the town had a "dreadful problem with alcohol".
But Nightclub licensee Martin Haywood said a ban on advertising would have little effect as people would still drink at home.
He said: "There are serious health issues in Blackpool but from the pub perspective, we all work with the licensing authorities and police and we create environments where we can monitor people's drinking.
"We feel the problem is people drinking at home, we can monitor it here, but we can't monitor it at home."
The Health and Social Care Information Centre released figures in March saying Blackpool has the highest alcohol-related liver disease mortality rate among under 75s in England at 35 per 100,000 of the population.
The council said advertisements could also be banned from buses and billboards.
Ms Riding said: "We know that alcohol can have a big effect on mortality rates, domestic violence and crime, and it's an issue that we are working to address head-on through a number of methods.
"We want people to enjoy visiting the town, and accept that having a drink is part of that, however we do need to stop the detrimental impact that it can have on many people's domestic lives as well."
She added: "To ignore those problems would not be fair to the residents whose lives are ruined by alcohol."
Blackpool Council is already running a public consultation, which could see the resort's pubs and clubs being forced to close at 03:00 GMT at the latest. Some are currently open until 05:00 GMT.
The council scrutiny committee has agreed a recommendation to investigate the possibility of introducing legislation.
