Preston police-chase man shot himself with crossbow

A man shot himself in the head with a crossbow after being involved in a police car chase in the early hours.

He had been spotted with the weapon by a police officer in Beacon Fell, Preston at about 02:30 BST.

The officer alerted colleagues after the man sped off, before he was stopped by a patrol car on the M55 link road to the M6 at about 03:30 BST.

Lancashire Police said the man then "discharged" the crossbow. He is in a stable condition in hospital.

The M55/M6 link road was closed until about 07:45 BST, police said.

The injured man is being treated at the Royal Preston Hospital.
