Thousands of people have lined Blackpool Promenade to watch the start of the World Fireworks Championships.

Sweden opened this year's event with Austria and Canada due to display their pyrotechnical prowess to coordinated music over the next two Friday evenings.

It was Sweden's debut in the competition.

The winning team out of the three will be announced on 26 September after an exhibition from the UK's Titanium team.

It is the fourth year the resort has staged the championships.

Councillor Graham Cain, Blackpool Council's cabinet member for tourism and leisure, who is one of the four judges, said it has become a "firm favourite in the Blackpool calendar".

He said: "It makes for a perfect way to start the weekend for those who go along and is also an incredibly skilful and serious technical competition."

All displays are subject to suitable weather conditions.
