Man killed in head-on crash in Scarisbrick is named

A man killed in a head-on crash which left three other people in hospital has been named by police.

Andrew Birch, 46, of Skelmersdale, Lancashire, died when a Peugeot and a Toyota crashed in Southport Road, Scarisbrick, on Tuesday evening.

Police believe a BMW car was also involved but drove off after the crash.

Mr Birch's 80-year-old mother - who was driving the Peugeot - was seriously injured and remains in intensive care.

A 41-year-old woman driving the Toyota was taken to hospital with serious injuries including a broken leg and broken ribs.

Her 15-year-old son was taken to hospital with minor injuries and later discharged.

Sgt John Jennings, of Lancashire Police, appealed for anyone with information about the BMW to come forward.

He said: "We know that someone out there knows who was driving that car and I would urge them to come forward and speak to police as soon as possible."
