Police are looking for a man who they believe abducted a six-year-old girl in a car in Burnley.

Officers said she was taken from Nairne Street at 16:00 GMT on Thursday. She was dropped off 30 minutes later in Whitefield Street, Hapton.

She was found and returned home before police were called.

The suspect is described as white with a tanned complexion, aged in his 40s and bald. It is not thought the girl knew her abductor, police said.

The car is thought to be large and "dark coloured".

Det Ch Insp Joanne McHugh said: "I would like to reassure the public that whilst incidents of this kind are rare, we have stepped up police patrols in the area.

"We have specially trained officers offering support to this young girl and her family at this time."
