A 17-year-old girl who was one of two people hit by a car and killed in Preston has been named by police.

Shelby Lauren Maher, from Preston, and Rachel Murphy, 23, died when they were struck by a BMW in Brockholes Brow on Wednesday evening.

They were walking in a group of five, when three of them were knocked down.

Paying tribute, Ms Maher's family said she could be shy, but "once she did know you, she could be the best friend you could ever wish for".

They said they were "devastated by the loss of a daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece and cousin" who "loved to sing and loved her music".

The driver of the BMW, a 21-year-old man from Blackburn, was treated for shock.

The road was closed for three-and-a-half hours and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
