Man jailed for killing girlfriend's estranged husband
A man who killed his girlfriend's estranged husband has been jailed for five years.
Steven Whitney, 50, died after being stabbed in the heart in an alleyway in Fishwick Parade, Preston, in December.
Hugh Cushnaghan, 64, of Montgomery Street in Irvine, North Ayrshire, had admitted manslaughter on the first day of his trial at Preston Crown Court.
Lancashire Police said a fight broke out when Mr Whitney discovered his wife at a house with Cushnaghan.
Mr Whitney confronted Cushnaghan with a baseball bat and a fight ensued which spilled out into the alleyway.
Police and paramedics were called at about 05:45 GMT on 20 December and Mr Whitney was taken by ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Det Insp Simon Cheyte said: "Mr Whitney was hoping to rebuild his relationship with his wife and this is clear from text messages sent between the pair shortly before his death.
"He must have been incredibly shocked to discover Mrs Whitney and Cushnaghan were together and a fraught situation escalated quickly with tragic consequences."
