A moped rider has died after crashing into a ditch in Lancashire.

Phillip Parr mounted a grass verge in Dam Wood Lane, Scarisbrick, before dropping into a large ditch at about 21:45 BST on Wednesday, police said.

The 47-year-old, from Wigan, suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been riding a Piaggio Vespa towards Burscough.

Police are appealing for two motorcyclists who were seen riding in front of him to contact them.

Sgt Finn Quainton said: "We are very keen to trace these two riders to establish whether they can provide any evidence as witnesses that could help with our enquiries."
