Welburn Transport depot blast homes still evacuated

Hundreds of people forced out of their homes after explosions at a West Yorkshire transport depot will not be allowed to return until Friday evening.

Sixty-two properties were evacuated after a blaze at Welburn Transport in Church Lane, Featherstone, Pontefract, at about 1700 BST on Thursday.

Thirty firefighters tackled the fire and saved two nearby homes from setting alight, the fire service said.

An exclusion zone remains in place around the area and roads are closed.

They include Ackton Road, Fairfax Avenue and Willow Lane, which are expected to re-open on Friday evening.

Two men suffered minor injuries when acetylene gas cylinders exploded.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said officials were working with police to establish the cause of the fire.

Two firefighting teams were still at the scene earlier as the area cools down.

Rachael Smith, a local resident, said: "There were mini explosions, and big explosions.

"There were massive flames, black billowing smoke over the church, white smoke and some bangs.

"It was horrendous."
