Work is due to start on Monday on a new multi-million pound swimming pool in West Yorkshire.

The £10m Wakefield ONE, on Sun Lane in Wakefield city centre, will include two pools, a fitness centre, a 200-seater viewing area and a cafe.

The building is scheduled to open in summer 2012.

People have been calling for new pool facilities in the city since Sun Lane baths closed in 2006, when it was found to be in danger of collapsing.

Wakefield Council leader Peter Box said: "We are all conscious that Wakefield was left without a swimming pool when Sun Lane closed.

"We had lengthy discussions on what should be provided in its place and I am very pleased to see the start of work on the new pool on the original site."

Mr Box said the pool would be "another great asset" for the city on the back of the opening of the Hepwoth art gallery and shopping centre Trinity Walk.

The council said local sports clubs and community organisations were being consulted on the project progress to ensure activities planned for the new centre met community needs.
