A six-year-old boy has died in a hit and run collision in West Yorkshire, police have said.

The boy was hit by a car shortly after noon on Saturday on Fishponds Lane, in the Chapelthorpe area of Wakefield.

The driver of the car failed to stop and police believe a young, white male was at the wheel.

The vehicle involved was a small, light coloured hatchback and officers said the front of it may have suffered damage as a result of the crash.

Det Ch Insp, Simon Bottomley, from West Yorkshire Police, said: "This is a tragic incident which has devastated the boy's family.

"I would urge anyone with information to come forward and contact the police."
