Fox's Biscuits' Batley factory saved from closure

A West Yorkshire biscuit factory at risk of closure is to stay open.

Fox's Biscuits announced in 2008 it wanted to merge its plants in Batley and Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, and build a modern factory on one of the sites.

Parent company Northern Foods has now said the sites will remain open after investing £27m in them.

Andrew Hanson, from the firm, said about 200 jobs out of 1,200 had gone at the Batley site over 18 months but were mostly through voluntary redundancy.

In 2008, Northern Foods said its factories were "relatively old" and needed "significant investment".

But Mr Hanson said the company had decided not to build a super factory and reinvest in the sites, including one in Kirkham, Lancashire.

"We saw the best way to maximise the money we had was to spend it on all three sites.

"I think what that's done is improve productivity and efficiency across all three sites rather than spending it on one site.

"Today is about good news for employees."
