Leeds Pride 2011: thousands in city

More than 30,000 people are expected to take part in the Leeds Pride 2011 event on Sunday.

The celebration of the gay, lesbian and transgender community starts at 12:00 BST in Millennium Square.

Speeches by the lord mayor, councillors and union leaders will be followed by a parade through the city centre.

The organisers said although this was only the sixth Pride event in Leeds, it was building a reputation as an open-minded and friendly city.

Leeds Pride organiser Tom Doyle said: "I think the serious message has to be that Leeds is a 21st Century city that is welcoming and safe for everyone in our community.

"I have friends who come up from London and Manchester, where they have more established Prides, but they always comment on how friendly Leeds Pride is and also how friendly the general population are who are watching the parade."
