Woman, 77, trapped by bin arson attack in Huddersfield

Firefighters rescued a 77-year-old woman after a bin was set on fire outside her home in Huddersfield.

West Yorkshire Police said the woman was trapped in her house on Holmfield Road in the Clayton West area after the fire started at about 01:00 BST.

She was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital.

The fire comes just days after police and the fire service issued a warning about the rise in arson attacks over the summer holidays.

David Tattersfield, from the Kirklees Arson Taskforce, said: "During the summer when school's out for the summer, we tend to see an increase in deliberate fires.

"While firefighters are tackling these deliberately-started fires, they are unavailable to attend other life-threatening incidents, which means crews from further afield have to be called in.

"Firefighters have been called to such fires on a number of occasions recently and I believe it's only a matter of time before a member of the public or firefighters is seriously injured."
