PC Ian Bell faces assault for alleged baton attack

A PC who allegedly hit a man on the head with a baton has been summoned to appear in court to face a charge of assault, the police watchdog has said.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said West Yorkshire officer Ian Bell would face the charge at Sheffield Magistrates' Court.

It follows an IPCC inquiry into an incident in 2011 in Castleford in which a man was allegedly hit with a baton.

PC Bell, 39, is due to appear in court on 11 June.
