Speedway could return next year to Bradford's Odsal Stadium, according to the promoter behind the plan.

Tony Mole said he had been granted permission by the local council to reintroduce racing.

Mr Mole now needs the approval of the ground's owners the Rugby Football League (RFL) and the stadium's tenants, Bradford Bulls rugby league club.

Racing ended in 1997 when the Bradford Dukes team left the site due to a planned redevelopment.

Mr Mole, who was involved in running the Birmingham Brummies speedway team, said officials from the sport's governing body, the Speedway Control Bureau, had inspected the ground and confirmed the track met their specifications.

He said: "Now we are in a position to move forward and talk further with the rugby league club and seek approval from the Rugby Football League which I hope won't be a problem.

"I would then need to apply to the British Speedway Promoters' Association at their pre-AGM in September and there is the possibility of applying for the Bradford and Halifax Dukes to ride in the Premier League in 2014."

The BBC has been unable to contact the RFL for a comment.
