A man who went on a rampage in a digger at a recycling tip has been jailed for three years.

Trevor Lewis, 59, of Mayroyd Moorings, Hebden Bridge, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court after admitting causing £300,000 worth of criminal damage at an earlier hearing.

The incident happened at the Eastwood Recycling Centre in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, in July.

Lewis, who worked at the site, claimed in court he was depressed.

Councillor Stephen Baines, Conservative leader of Calderdale Council, said the damage to the site was a "terrible blow" to the local community.

"The site is completely flattened now and is going to be out of use until November.

"It was a well used and popular facility for the people in this area," he said.

The rampage happened seven months after the centre had undergone renovations and improvements.

Mr Baines said the cost of the repairs would be met by the insurers of the site's operator, Sita UK.

Jan Lamping, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "This act of wanton vandalism caused an estimated £300,000 damage to the site, as well as some damage to a neighbouring property.

"It has also resulted in considerable inconvenience to local residents while the site is closed for rebuilding."
