The funeral of former Leeds United chairman Leslie Silver, who has died aged 89, has taken place.

Mr Silver held the position between 1983 and 1996, presiding over the club's return to the top flight of English football and subsequent title success in 1992.

In a statement issued on Monday the club said it was "extremely saddened" by news of his death.

The funeral took place at Leeds Jewish Cemetery on Wednesday.

Mr Silver, who became an OBE in 1982, was also the chancellor of Leeds Beckett University, formerly Leeds Metropolitan University, from 1999 to 2005.

Prof Susan Price, the university's vice chancellor said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former chancellor Leslie Silver and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

"Leslie made a lasting impact during his long-standing relationship with our university and his integrity, passion and commitment were evident to all those that worked alongside him. He will be greatly missed."
