Weapons dating back to WW1 found in University of Leeds basement

Weapons dating back to World War One were found in a building at the University of Leeds.

The discovery was made at 15:40 BST on Wednesday during an audit of a basement vault in the Chemistry West building.

The area was closed while an Army bomb disposal team removed the items to a quarry to carry out a controlled explosion.

Ch Insp Ian Williams said the weapons had been in a locked, alarmed cabinet.

The university said they had been part of a World War One collection.
