Leicestershire's walking week kicks off

People across Leicestershire are being urged to get more active as the county's Walking Week gets under way.

More than 70 walks are on offer, including countryside rambles, heritage trails and guided tours for all ages and ability levels.

More than 1,000 people took part in the same event in September 2009.

As part of the week, county councillor Ernie White is undertaking the 100-mile "Leicestershire Round" for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

He has pledged to complete the trip in no more than 11 walking days, and will "fine" himself for extra days if he completes it over a longer period.

Councillor White said: "The Leicestershire Round is the county's main long-distance footpath and a sort of flagship for the fantastic local rights of way network.

"Bosworth Battlefield is one of the county's most iconic landmarks, so seemed like the ideal place to begin my walk."

To support the week, Leicester's Tourist Information Centre (TIC) will offer special deals on books or maps related to walking in the city or county.
