Three defrosting cars stolen after motors left running

Police are warning motorists not to leave their engines running while they defrost their cars after three vehicles were stolen in a week.

A Volkswagen Touran was stolen from a drive in Measham and a Ford Focus and another Touran stolen from Woodhouse Eaves and Burton on the Wolds.

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: "Don't be tempted to leave your vehicle unattended with its engine running."

Officers are investigating the possibility that the crimes are linked.

Insurance worry

In another incident, a man got into a Mercedes on Swithland Lane in Rothley while the engine was running but ran away when challenged by the owner.

Sgt Chris Haines, from Charnwood local policing unit, said: "During the colder weather it is tempting to leave car engines running while defrosting the windows but this means it is just so easy for someone to get in and drive off.

"Most car thieves are opportunists who are just looking for that one chance to steal your car. Others take advantage of the cold weather and are actively on the look out for an easy target.

"It is also worth pointing out that if a car is stolen in this way you might not be covered by your insurance company."
