Woman dies after Leicestershire house fire rescue

A woman has died following a house fire in the early hours of the morning in Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Leicestershire.

The woman, believed to be in her 60s, died at the scene despite being rescued from the bedroom of a house on Misby Road in the town just before 0500 GMT.

She was trapped in the house after a bed caught fire "from careless disposal of smoking materials", Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said.

The woman died despite attempts by paramedics to revive her.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was being carried out by police and fire officials.

The bed was destroyed in the fire and the rest of the house was badly damaged by smoke.
