Man, 19, robbed in Leicester city centre by gang

A 19-year-old man has been assaulted and robbed by a gang of men in Leicester city centre.

Police said the victim was walking along Cheapside on Friday evening when he was approached by about eight men.

As he neared St Martins Square the group of men pushed him up against a wall.

One of the men hit him across the face while the others grabbed the victim's bag and demanded his mobile phone. The gang then ran off towards Hotel Street.

'Extremely intimidated'

Police have appealed for anyone with any information about the incident, which happened about 1800 GMT, to contact them.

Pc Aimee Farmer, of Leicestershire Police, said: "The whole ordeal was very frightening for the victim. He felt extremely intimidated by the group."

"At that time in the evening on a Friday Leicester can start to get very busy.

"All of this increases the chances of someone spotting the incident or seeing the group in the area."
