Motorists in East Midlands warned of traffic jams

Motorists are being warned to expect traffic disruption along the M1 in the East Midlands due to a major car race.

The British Touring Car championships at Donington Park in Leicestershire on 16 and 17 April are expected to cause tailbacks, the Highways Agency said.

Drivers, including passengers using East Midlands Airport, are advised to allow extra time for journeys.

Racing car driver Jason Plato holds an early lead in the 2011 Dunlop British Touring Car Championship.

Touring cars travel at speeds of up to 130 mph (209 km/h) and are modified street cars based on two-litre saloons and hatchback designs.

The 2011 FIA World Touring Car Championship will be held at the track on 14 July.
