Leicester bicycle theft surge prompts warning

A sharp rise in bicycle thefts in Leicester has prompted a warning from police.

From December 2010 to May 2011 some 223 thefts were recorded in the city centre, an increase of a third compared with the same period the previous year.

Police said they would target the issue in the summer months and three people had been arrested already.

But they added cyclists needed to play their part, keeping bikes secure and left in well lit areas.

Cyclists were also advised to keep details of their bike at home, including the make, colour, model and frame number and take a photograph for future reference.
