Leicestershire Police warning over cash promise scam

People are being targeted in a suspected inheritance scam in Leicestershire, police have warned.

It follows dozens of people being sent a letter with the promise of a cut of an inheritance.

Recipients are told they are able to claim half the money left in a foreign bank account by a deceased party, who apparently shared their surname.

They are then asked to pay an advanced fee to receive the supposed inheritance, said police.

Bogus officials

Police believe the letter has been sent by a fraudster claiming to be from the bank.

Det Con Paul Hawkins said: "It is our belief that the intention of this letter is to trick unknowing members of the public into handing over money to the sender and that it has not been sent by officials from Wing Hang Bank.

"Once a transaction has been completed it is possible that the recipient will never hear from the sender again or will be encouraged to send further funds on the promise of receiving the inheritance.

"If you have also received a letter I would urge you to make contact with us as soon as you possibly can."
