A man has been jailed for life for stabbing a stranger to death in a Loughborough street.

Andrew Smith, of Cartwright Street, Loughborough, was found guilty of the murder of Nitu Babu Das.

Smith, 39, admitted stabbing Mr Das, 23, of Cleeve Mount in the town, in a row over noise, but claimed he acted in self-defence.

A judge at Coventry Crown Court told Smith he will serve at least 22 years in prison.

A woman, 46, was cleared of murder and perverting the course of justice.

Mr Das and a group of friends had been involved in an argument outside a property before they were chased and he was attacked by Smith.

A post-mortem examination showed Mr Das died from a single stab wound to the heart during the incident on 26 July last year.

Det Ch Insp Neil Castle, of Leicestershire police, paid tribute to Mr Das's family, saying: "They have been needlessly robbed of any kind of future with him and nothing will ever be the same for them.

"Nitu's murder has had a devastating impact on his family and they have had to go through the further ordeal of losing their other son, Raj, some three months later in a road traffic collision."
