Leicester New Walk museum sees record visitors

A Leicester museum has seen a record number of visitors through its doors after a new gallery opened, the city council has said.

The New Walk Museum was visited by 5,244 people on 3 and 4 September compared to an average of 760 during a weekend.

A newly refurbished dinosaur gallery has been opened at the museum.

The display features large dinosaur skeletons from the Jurassic period and 560 million-year-old fossils.

Assistant City Mayor councillor Piara Singh Clair said: "These visitor figures are really impressive, we saw people visiting from up and down the country.

"It is not surprising really, given the national and international significance of the exhibits in the dinosaur gallery - some of which have never been seen before."
