Disruption warning over Leicester city centre marches

People are being warned that some roads will be closed and bus stops moved on Saturday because of two planned marches in Leicester city centre.

Leicester City Council said St Margaret's Way inbound and King Street would be shut from 09:00 GMT until after 14:00 GMT.

The English Defence League and Leicester United Against Facism plan to march from 12:30 GMT.

Roads will be reopened after both demonstrations have ended.

Parking restrictions

The authority also said that motorists would not be allowed to park their cars on roads affected by the protests from 09:00 till about 18:00 GMT.

There will be parking restrictions on the following roads; Burleys Way, Abbey Street, Belgrave Gate, Church Gate, Pocklingtons Walk, Millstone Lane, Horsefair Street, Halford Street, Charles Street and Belvoir Street.

Rory Palmer, deputy mayor of Leicester, said: "People just need to be aware there will be some disruption for a short period in the middle of the day, and to plan for this.

"We will have to close some roads on the routes affected, and for safety reasons there will be no parking allowed on them from 09:00 GMT on Saturday, but as the marches pass through our aim is to lift restrictions as quickly as we can.

"Some bus stops will have to be moved for a while because of the road closures, but information will be available at the bus stops."

All Leicester car parks will be open as usual.
