A man who was attacked in a street in Leicester has died a week later of his injuries.

Police said they believe the 41-year-old was assaulted after an altercation with a group on Northfield Road, in Northfields, on 9 June.

He suffered serious head injuries and died a week later at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre.

Six boys and a girl, aged between 13 and 15, were arrested in connection with the attack and released on bail.

Det Ch Insp Matt Hewson said: "The victim of the assault was sadly pronounced dead this morning. His family have been spoken to and are understandably devastated.

"Although we have a number of people arrested as part of this investigation we are keen to speak to other witnesses to gain as much information about the incident as possible.

"This is now being treated as a murder investigation so I would urge anyone with information to call us immediately."
