Belvoir Street to shut to safeguard clubbers

A main road in Leicester is to be closed at weekends to help keep late night revellers safe.

Police said the high number of bars and nightclubs on Belvoir Street meant it became dangerously congested on Friday and Saturday night.

With the agreement of the city council and local businesses, the road will be closed to traffic from 22:00 BST until 04:00 BST for a five-week trial period.

Bus services will be diverted and extra taxi ranks set up nearby, police said.

Ch Insp Adam Streets, the city officer leading the operation, said public safety was at the forefront of their thinking.

"Officers on duty in the area have felt that the issues of congestion and public safety needed to be addressed, in particular the problems traffic could cause for emergency service vehicles," he said.

"As a result we have spent time planning this so that residents, businesses, emergency services and visitors to the area all feel the benefit and can enjoy spending time in the city whilst also feeling safe."
