A man was found guilty of attempted murder and two counts of rape following a "horrific attack" in Leicester.

Arturas Ardavicius, 26, of Bonchurch Street, was convicted on Thursday following a nine-day trial.

Speaking after the jury recorded its verdict, his victim said she was pleased with the result and hoped he would receive a lengthy jail term.

Police praised the woman and said they hoped it sends out a message to other victims of sexual assault.

'Dangerous man'

The woman, in her thirties, was sexually assaulted in a car in Richard III Road at about 03:30 GMT on 7 July.

She escaped from the vehicle and alerted a passing member of the public.

Following an extensive investigation and appeals for information, Ardavicius, a Lithuanian national, was brought to justice.

The woman, who cannot be named, said: "I'm really pleased with the result of the trial. I hope he receives a lengthy custodial sentence so he can't do this to anybody else because he's a dangerous man."

Investigating officer Det Con Nikki McLatchie said: "This is a good result and should send a positive message to other victims of sexual assault.

"This was a horrific assault and a very difficult and complex investigation and the victim showed commendable bravery."

Ardavicius will be sentenced on 15 March.
