Richard III archaeologist appointed OBE
The academic who led the team that found Richard III's remains has been made an OBE in the New Year Honours.
Richard Buckley, of the University of Leicester, was recognised for his contribution to archaeology.
The skeleton, found under a car park in the city, was confirmed as that of the last Plantagenet king in February.
Dr Satbir Singh Jassal, director of Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough, has been appointed MBE for his work on palliative care for children.
Dr Jassal, who is also a GP, said: "I was dumbstruck when I opened the envelope. I had to sit down for a half an hour and I kept looking at the paper."
He said the honour was one that he wanted to share with all the teams that work at the hospice.
Rainbows Hospice opened a £4m therapy wing and 14 new and refurbished bedrooms in 2011.
Karen Atkinson, 35, of Loughborough, who won more than 100 caps for England in her career as a netball player, has been appointed an MBE for her services to the sport.
She won three Commonwealth Games bronze meals with the England netball team.
