Loughborough bus ban call from business groups

Business leaders have called for backing for a trial scheme to ban buses from part of a Leicestershire town centre.

About 54% of the 1,300 people who responded to a public consultation wanted buses to be banned from Loughborough's Market Place.

Roger Perrett, a Business Improvement official, said the county council should now introduce the scheme.

However, the council said the result was not conclusive enough.

Councillor Peter Osbourne said: "I'd been led to believe by those who didn't want any buses to go through the Market Place that it was going to be overwhelming - like 95% of people against buses going through - so the result of the consultation was quite a surprise.

"There are impacts and consequences with whichever decision and when you've got a split like this, you're not going to please everybody."
