A man has been convicted of the attempted murder of a Namdhari Sikh spiritual leader in Leicester.

Harjit Singh Toor, 27, from Wood's Close, Oadby in Leicestershire, attacked Sri Satguru Uday Singh Ji with an axe at a Leicester temple in August 2013.

Toor admitted wounding but denied the more serious charge. He was found guilty by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court.

He was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Toor claimed he took an axe into the temple to scare his victim, but prosecutors said the attack was a "vicious assassination attempt".

Namdharis consider themselves members of the Sikh religion, but some mainstream Sikhs reject the association.
