Two teenage girls were killed in a collision between a car and a bus on Friday, police have confirmed.

The driver and passenger, aged 17 and 18, who died at the scene in Tickencote, Rutland, were pupils at nearby Oakham School.

The driver and eight passengers on the single decker bus received minor injuries.

Leicestershire Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened on Empingham Lane at about 13:25 GMT.

Det Con Pete Davies said the girls' blue Peugeot 206 was travelling along the lane towards Empingham when the crash happened.

The bus was travelling in the opposite direction towards Tickencote.

Empingham road was closed between Tickencote and Grantham Lane after the collision but has since re-opened.

A spokesman for independent Oakham School confirmed the girls were pupils but said it was not releasing further details at this stage.
