Lincolnshire County Council is spending £1.6m on improving the centre of a major town in the county.

The work to transform Grantham marketplace is due to start in May.

Business leaders said they hoped the regeneration will help attract more shoppers to the area.

Bijal Ladva, chairman of the Grantham Business Club, is urging the council to make sure businesses do not suffer while the work is carried out.

Traffic disruption

"A lot of businesses are worried about access to their businesses but we know that for short-term pain there will be long term success. Grantham needs this and it is long overdue," he said.

County council spokesman Les Outram said the town centre "looks tired" and will benefit from new high-quality stone paving.

"It will lift the centre of Grantham and follows our work in Lincoln and Stamford in the past few years," he said.

But the centre of the town will suffer traffic disruption during the 16-week project, Mr Outram added.
