Police name Lincoln man fatally hit by freight train

British Transport Police say a 20-year-old man who died when he was hit by a freight train near Lincoln was probably the victim of a "tragic accident".

Declan Wilkinson, from Lincoln, was hit by a train near Boultham level crossing at about 04:50 BST on Wednesday.

In a statement, Mr Wilkinson's mother Donna said her son had been out celebrating his 20th birthday on the night of the accident.

BTP said investigations into Mr Wilkinson's death were continuing.

In a statement, A BTP spokesman said: "Although the death is currently being treated as unexplained, it appears to have been a tragic accident and officers will be continuing their investigation in order to prepare a file for the coroner."

'Special' son

Mr and Mrs Wilkinson said they would miss their son "dearly".

"We are devastated by the loss of our son Declan, he was such a special person.

"Declan was full of life until the last moments and he was out with friends and family celebrating his 20th birthday on the night of the tragedy.

"We have been completely overwhelmed by the support we have received and would like to thank everyone for their help and compassion."
