A bungalow in a Lincolnshire village has been severely damaged by a blaze caused by Christmas lights falling on to an electric fire.

Firefighters were called to the property in Main Road, Donington on Bain, just after 15:25 GMT on Thursday.

Four appliances tackled the blaze which caused "severe damage" to the semi-detached bungalow and moderate damage to an adjoining property.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire.

'Very frightening'

Nick Davis, from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said the blaze started in the front room of the semi-detached bungalow and spread to the roof of an adjoining property.

The fire closed the road for several hours and a number of local residents were evacuated.

Shop owner Jenny Ward, who witnessed the fire, said she was surprised how quickly it took hold.

She described the blaze as "very frightening".
