Council backs Quadrant stadium plans in Boston
A major project to build a new stadium and homes in Lincolnshire has been approved by councillors.
The Quadrant project near Boston will include a stadium for Boston United FC, shops and a hotel.
The plans were approved in a 10-2 vote by Boston Borough Council, but will still need the backing of the Secretary of State before work can begin.
The £100m project, put forward by Chestnut Homes and Boston United, is located near the A16 in Wyberton.
The project is expected to create about 500 jobs, but some members of Wyberton Parish Council said it would harm local businesses and put pressure on health and school provision in the area.
A report from the council's planning department said a consultation resulted in 200 responses with 78% in favour and 22% opposed to the project.
Of 550 people who voted in a referendum held in Wyberton, 86% opposed the scheme.
Under the plans, the Conference North club would move from its York Road stadium to a new 4,000-seat ground.
If the project gets final approval, work could begin in 2015.
