Woman suffers broken leg in West End police car crash

An inquiry has been launched after a police patrol car hit a woman in the West End breaking her leg.

Witnesses said the 27-year-old was crossing the road in Piccadilly Circus when she was hit by the marked car.

It was travelling in a bus lane towards oncoming traffic as it answered an emergency call with its lights and sirens on on 21 July.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Rachel Cerfontyne, from the IPCC, said: "A young woman has been left needing major surgery for very painful injuries as a result of this collision and it is important that we examine the actions of the police officers and staff involved."
