A 19-month-old girl has died following a fire at a south-east London flat in which four other people were rescued.

Fire crews pulled the family of five, who had been unconscious, from the two-bedroom first-floor flat in Arnould Avenue, Camberwell, at about 0440 BST.

All five - a woman in her 40s, a woman in her 20s, a teenage girl, a four-year-old boy and a two-year-old - were unconscious and taken to hospital.

But the youngest child died shortly after arrival, police said.

Police said the teenage girl is in a "critical" condition.

The two women and the boy are in a serious condition, officers added.

Emergency crews said the flat was completely destroyed in the blaze.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said all five people were taken to hospital in a "serious condition".

Correction 22 September 2010. This story was amended after an earlier version, based on information received by the Metropolitan Police, stated an incorrect age for the girl who died.
