Girl dies after Bethnal Green school stairwell fall

An 11-year-old girl who fell down a stairwell at a school in east London has died.

Elle Hiscott suffered serious injuries when she plunged two floors from a spiral staircase at Raine's Foundation School in Bethnal Green last week.

She was being treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital and died on Thursday.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into the incident found the school had "no case to answer" in terms of any wrongdoing.

After the accident on 13 October, Elle was taken by ambulance to the Royal London Hospital before being moved to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Site visit

A spokesman for Great Ormond Street said: "We can confirm Elle Hiscott sadly died at the hospital yesterday and we offer our sincere condolences to her family.

"Elle's family would like to thank all the clinical staff who were involved in her care and have requested absolute privacy at this very difficult time."

Tower Hamlets Council said the HSE carried out a site visit at the Church of England secondary school and found "there was no case to answer".

Police said they were not treating the matter as suspicious.

On Friday, a spokesman for the council said: "We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and our thoughts and sympathies are with them at this most difficult time.

"We will continue to work closely with the family and school to provide all possible support."
