Murderer who hid father's body in a carpet jailed

An unemployed man has been jailed for life for murdering his father and hiding his body in a carpet at the family home.

Charles Heath's body was not found until six weeks after he was last seen in October 2009, the Old Bailey heard.

Police found the 65-year-old's body in a bedroom after calls from neighbours at Oban Street, Poplar, east London.

John Heath, 34, of Oban Street, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 12 years.

He had pleaded guilty to murder and perverting the course of justice on Wednesday.

Mr Heath, a retired French polisher, had been attacked with a hammer during a row.

But the exact cause of death could not be found because of the time which had elapsed since he died.

John Heath's brother Robert, 28, who pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice, was jailed for 30 months.

A murder charge against him was dropped after the prosecution offered no evidence.
