Woman charged over two deaths in Deptford blaze

A woman has been charged with arson and manslaughter following a fire in south London which left two people dead.

Fifty firefighters tackled the blaze on the top floor of 16-storey Marine Tower in Abinger Grove, Deptford on Friday.

Two women, aged 42 and 59, died at the scene, and post-mortems confirmed both died as a result of the blaze.

Sandra Clarke, 49, who lives in the tower block, will appear via video link at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Lewisham Council said around 30 people stayed in temporary accommodation on Friday night.

London Ambulance Service said, in addition to the two people who died, four others were treated by paramedics. One of those treated was taken to hospital.

The London Fire Brigade said six people were rescued from the building and 35 more got themselves out.

Officials have not yet named the two women who died.
