Death in flat fire in Surbiton, south London

A man has been killed in a fire at a flat in south-west London, the emergency services have confirmed.

Firefighters were called to the home in St Andrew's Road, Surbiton, at about 0758 BST. Two fire engines attended and the fire was under control by 0837 BST.

About half of the first-floor flat was destroyed by the fire, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

The dead victim was discovered inside the property. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

An LFB spokesman said: "Fire crews were called to a flat with shops below on Saint Andrew's Road in Surbiton this morning.

"Around half of the first floor flat was damaged by the blaze.

"Firefighters found the body of a man inside the flat and he was pronounced dead at the scene."
