Micham Eastfields level crossing targeted by police

A south London level crossing which more than 100 people have been caught misusing has been targeted by police.

British Transport Police officers were stationed at Mitcham Eastfields station on Monday.

They said they intended to educated motorists and pedestrians about how to used the level crossing properly.

The operation was launched after cars and pedestrians were caught using the crossing while red lights were flashing and barriers were lowering.

Since February, three similar operations have discovered more than 100 people misusing the crossing.

Pc Chris Shepherd said: "This education and enforcement initiative gave us another opportunity to drive home the message that running the risk at a level crossing is just not worth it.

"By trying to save a few seconds, you could end up seriously hurt or losing your life."

Network Rail safety manager Ellie Reilly added: "It's in everybody's interests to reduce disruption at level crossings. "
