Body discovered after East Ham flat fire

Firefighters found the body of a man in a flat in east London after putting out a fire in the early hours.

Four fire engines and about 20 firefighters were called at 0135 BST on Monday and took more than an hour to get the fire under control.

It is not yet known whether the 79-year-old man died as a result of the fire, which damaged half of his second-floor flat in Barking Road, East Ham.

London Fire Brigade is investigating the cause of the fire.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said that the investigation was being treated as non-suspicious.
